Roxy’s Retro 9/28/22 R.E.M. “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)”

AS A TEEN, I LOVED TO STAY UP TO WATCH LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, HAD TO BE SNEAKY AND GOT BUSTED BY MOM A COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT! NOT ONLY WAS THE MIDWESTERN DUDE’S STYLE OF COMEDY THE BEST, IMO, I LEANED INTO THE SHOW’S MUSICAL GUESTS AS MY NEW MUSIC DISCOVERY, WE DIDN’T HAVE TIK TOK, YOUTUBE AND SPOTIFY! IN 1983, THE LETTERMAN SHOW HOSTED THE COLLEGE RADIO DARLINGS, R.E.M. IT WAS THE BANDS VERY FIRST TIME ON NATIONAL TV AND MAN O MAN, I FELL IN LOVE WITH MICHAEL STIPE’S VOCALS, HIS DEMEANOR, AND HIS CURLY HAIR…YEAH IT WAS SO LONG AGO THAT STIPE HAD HAIR! THE GEORGIA BASED ALT ROCKERS PERFORMED 2 SONGS THAT NIGHT, “RADIO FREE EUROPE” AND A YET TO BE TITLED DITTY. AS HE ALWAYS DID, LETTERMAN SHOWED SO MUCH GENUINE ENTHUSIASM AND RESPECT FOR THE MUSICAL GUESTS, HE NERDED OUT ALL THE TIME…MAN I JUST LOVE THAT KOOKY GUY AND WHAT HE DID FOR MY MUSIC DISCOVERY. THAT UNTITLED SONG R.E.M. PLAYED BACK IN 1983 WAS RELEASED THE FOLLOWING YEAR…”SO. CENTRAL RAIN (I’M SORRY)”…NO NEED TO BE SORRY, IT’S A BANGER! ~ROXY
