Springfest is a tribute to SOMMERGEWINN EISENACH, the biggest traditional spring festival in Germany. Celebrated in various forms for centuries in Eisenach, the first procession through the city was in 1897, now there are over 100 horse and carriage floats, and it is followed by a debate between Frau Sunnah, a sun goddess, and Mr. Winter.
Chasing away winter and welcoming summer dates back to the pagan New Year, when only the summer and winter seasons were recognized, but these days is celebrated in what we know as early spring.
Every year the traditions, decorated buildings, colorful market and many small stalls attract tens of thousands of visitors to Eisenach, Saxony in eastern Germany, to join in with the Sommergewinn celebrations. And say a first “Goodbye” to winter.
